The genus of Crematogaster, commonly referred to as acrobat ants, is very prevalent throughout Virginia. Colonies grow relatively quickly and may be found up in trees and vines, under rocks, in wood, under bark, and in soil. Differentiating each species often comes down to microscopic differences such as hairs, sculpturing, and spines, but myrmecologists and hobbyists alike can often tell apart different species in the field with relative accuracy, given enough experience.
